A Day in the Life of an Interior Designer

If you’ve ever walked into a beautifully finished home and wondered, “How did they make this look so effortless?”, the answer usually involves a lot of early mornings, colour swatches, site visits, supplier calls and a very organised calendar!

At Melissa Jane Interiors, no two days are exactly the same. From designing elegant family homes to managing full renovations, our work as interior designers in the Algarve involves far more than selecting furniture and fabrics. Here’s a glimpse behind the scenes of a typical day.

Planning, Procurement and Client Check-Ins

Most days start before the first client meeting. We review project timelines, chase deliveries and answer emails from tradespeople who are already on site. A large part of interior design in Portugal is project coordination: making sure the sofa arrives before the painter finishes, that the curtains are measured before the track is installed, and that every element of a project is delivered at the right time.

The quieter morning hours are also ideal for sourcing. We look through fabric collections, compare stone samples, research furniture and lighting, and pull together furniture schemes and material palettes. This is where the overall look and feel of a space begins to take shape, one carefully considered decision at a time.

Site Visits and Design Meetings

By late morning, we’re often out of the studio visiting properties. Site visits are an essential part of the interior design process; a room can look very different on a floor plan than it does in person.

We check progress, review finishes, measure spaces, coordinate with contractors and solve problems as they arise. We also photograph key stages of the project so clients can stay informed throughout the process.

Back at the showroom, client meetings are where ideas become decisions. We present mood boards, fabric and material samples, furniture options and layouts, then refine the design based on client feedback.

Whether we’re working on a villa in the Algarve, a contemporary apartment in the north of Portugal, or a complete property renovation elsewhere in Europe, good interior design is collaborative. Our role is to understand each client's lifestyle and personal taste, then translate that into a cohesive, comfortable and considered interior.

 

Detailing and Styling

Afternoons are often dedicated to the finer details that make a design feel complete. This might involve specifying trims, reviewing bespoke joinery drawings, selecting artwork, confirming lighting or planning the final styling and installation.

This is often the less visible side of working with an interior designer in Portugal, but it’s where a room can go from simply looking good to feeling truly finished and cohesive.

We also spend time on the business side of design: preparing quotes, reviewing invoices, negotiating with suppliers and coordinating installation schedules. Creativity and administration go hand in hand when managing successful interior design projects.

The Part You Don’t See

A day in the life of an interior designer involves far more than choosing cushions. It’s about problem-solving, planning, sourcing, project management, relationship building and, inevitably, a fair amount of logistics.

Behind every beautifully finished interior is a network of suppliers, craftsmen, contractors and designers working together to bring the vision to life. But when a project finally comes together and a client walks into a space that feels completely like them, every spreadsheet, supplier call and site visit becomes worthwhile.
