The terrace becomes the main living space

 During the summer months, the covered terrace is often used more than the indoor sitting room. We treat it accordingly, designing it as a true outdoor living room with a finished ceiling, layered lighting instead of a single wall light, and furniture that's comfortable enough for long evenings of entertaining.

The best terraces also include ceiling fans for summer and a fire pit or outdoor fireplace, allowing the space to be enjoyed throughout the year.

Outdoor kitchens deserve the same attention as indoor ones

 A barbecue alone rarely creates a functional entertaining space. We design outdoor kitchens with the same workflow as an interior kitchen: generous preparation space beside the cooking area, refrigeration within easy reach, and practical storage for crockery, glassware and serving dishes.

The result is effortless entertaining, with the host spending more time with guests and less time walking back and forth to the main kitchen.

Lighting should create atmosphere, not brightness

 The wrong lighting can completely change the feel of an outdoor space. Bright overhead fittings not only destroy ambience but also attract insects. We prefer layered, dimmable lighting, combining discreet wall lights, subtle step lighting and gentle illumination within planting.

The most successful outdoor lighting schemes rely on very little light above head height, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that feels luxurious rather than over-lit.

Bedrooms should stay cool long after sunset

 A west-facing bedroom with extensive glazing can remain uncomfortably warm well into the evening. Wherever possible, we address this through thoughtful design rather than relying solely on air conditioning. External shutters, deep window reveals, breathable natural materials and ceiling fans all help bedrooms cool naturally, improving comfort while reducing energy consumption.

Create a second outdoor lounge

 One dining table is rarely enough for a relaxed Algarve evening. We often design a second outdoor seating area with generous sofas, occasional tables and carefully positioned planting to create a sense of intimacy without blocking the view. It encourages guests to move naturally from dinner to drinks, allowing the evening to continue long after the table has been cleared.

Luxury villa design isn't about how a property looks at midday in an estate agent's photographs. It's about how it feels at eleven o'clock at night, with soft lighting, music playing quietly and the last of the day's warmth leaving the stone.
